Why the honoree chose the book
Wendell Berry is a national treasure. His fiction and nonfiction provide an extended argument for the value of place and the catastrophic consequences of neglecting the people, things, and activities that make communities work. This book brings together the most consequential nonfiction of the first half of his writing life.
