Why the honoree chose the book
Tagore exemplifies the ideal political intellectual for me. He challenged existing structures of inequality through his stories, poems and songs. I use his novel Home and the World in my South Asia classes, and I find that Tagore is more relevant than ever. I also wanted to include the works of a non-English writer and introduce the UD community to some amazing short stories as an window into Tagore's oeuvre.
