Why the honoree chose the book
American Cultural Studies: An Introduction to American Culture was one of the first books I read as a graduate student and provided one of the most compelling critical examinations of how American culture and identity are shaped through adherence to ideological constructs. The authors refer to this phenomenon as "Americanness." At that stage in my intellectual journey, the concept offered one of the clearest frameworks for understanding how power, ideology, and social structures shape cultural knowledge, perspectives, and cultural identity.
