Why the honoree chose the book
Augustine's Confessions is a rhetorical masterpiece in which this theologian and professor of rhetoric makes a compelling case that, in the end, argument is insufficient for finding faith. Instead, his narrative insists, faith finds us and does so at the very limits of reason. Talking about this book with students in first-year Core was one of the great joys of my years teaching at the University of Dayton.
