Book Selection

Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson

Why the honoree chose the book

I selected Brown Girl Dreaming because it captures Black childhood and imagination with clarity, warmth, and joy through a verse structure that feels musical and alive. It reflects how I understand learning and becoming—not as linear, but as rhythmic, layered, and deeply personal—where memory, delight, and self-definition are central. The book also aligns with my commitment to understanding storytelling, particularly Black storytelling, as both intellectual practice and lived experience.
