Abstract
What I am privileged to speak about with you is the result of such a postconciliar national decision, the joint pastoral of the Bishops of the United States, on the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and Mother of the Church, articulating the doctrine and the hopes of the Second Vatican Council. The episcopal letter will, it is hoped, exemplify and achieve both desirable growth and necessary accommodation in Church life, with the high-marks of self-reflection, with a call for Christian unity, and with an openness to the signs of the times-all with special respect to the Blessed Virgin Mary, woman of faith.
