Abstract
Leopoldo Alas' historical period, 1852-1901, was in Spain an ideological and emotional chaos. European ideas infiltrating the peninsula were rejected by tradition. Spain, faithful follower of Thomistic scholasticism, openly fought against the philosophical principles postulated by the disciples of Hegel, Renan and Krause.
