Abstract
The papers published here are from the London Böll Symposium, held 7-8 December 1995, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the writer's death. These articles present new critical perspectives on a writer who is now generally accepted as one of the most important literary figures in Germany during the second half of the twentieth century. The contributions come mainly from Britain, but also from Germany, France and the U.S.A. One relatively neglected area of Böll scholarship receives particular attention here. This is a group of essays that treat Böll's contributions to radio and film and examine the work of a number of renowned directors who have translated his scenarios and characters into the language of the popular mass media.
