Abstract

Across urban, suburban, or rural settings in the US, communities consist of individuals with various racial, religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Guardians Ad Litem (GALs), appointed by Judges and Magistrates in the Juvenile Court to advocate for the best interests of Children in Need, and staff from agencies that work with Children in Need and their families must understand these variations in order to better assist the children and their families. The goal is to enable support for the child and family through the perspective of that family’s practices (that are appropriate and safe), and not those of the individual helping the family.
