Abstract
If your first excuse for not starting a strength training program is lack of funds for a gym membership or new exercise equipment, you might have to come up with a new reason. Two certified strength trainers who are also graduate students in the University of Dayton's health and sport science department offer some tips for starting a training program at home without investing big bucks. Tanya Miszko and Cliff Dooman suggest starting at the recycling bin. Filling a plastic milk jug with water gives you a weight of approximately 7 pounds, or more if you fill it with sand. While you're in the garage, find an old broom stick. The handle can serve as a barbell or balance aid. "Just make sure that you even out the weight at the other end or cut off the handle," Dooman says.
