Why the honoree chose the book

Masha Gessen explains what lessons America can learn from Russia's rapid transition from a democracy to an authoritarian regime. The erosion of democratic norms in America has alarmed me from my dual perspectives as an immigrant from Soviet Ukraine and as a scholar studying Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet cultural history. Masha Gessen's brilliant work illuminated for me the importance of my area of expertise for American intellectual life, even as Slavic programs lose funding and disappear.
