Writing Process
In my english honors course, we are placed into different fairy tale "groups. My group was assigned Beauty and the Beast as the fairy tale we would be offering social commentary on for this essay assignment. I knew I wanted to primarily discuss gender and women's roles in my essay since Beauty and the Beast offers a lot of interesting avenues on what a woman's role is, particularly in the romantic and familial spheres. I chose two different film retellings of Beauty and the Beast for this paper. The first being La Belle et La Bete, a 1946 black and white film made in France and the second being Disney's classic 1991 retelling of the famous tale. I wanted to see how the execution of gender roles in both movies gave unique insights into the cultural and historical contexts of the time period. I used quotes from our course readings and also online articles and journals to support my evidence. Overall, while this process took me a while, I think it was rewarding as it allowed me to see that movies are not created in a vacuum and that the current events of our time are exemplified in media we consume.
