Description

There are ample opportunities to ground DEI issues — and course curriculum more generally — in real-world events. How can current news situated across broad domains (e.g., arts, culture, politics, technology) be harnessed to cultivate lively discussion in the classroom around diversity, equity, and inclusion? My talk showcases the ways in which broad conversations about current events create a safe environment to approach consequential issues facing the world today. For instance, my curriculum often addresses DEI issues related to branding, advertising, etc. In turn, my class and I discussed Victoria's Secret's somewhat recent repositioning toward a more "inclusive" image and what this means for body image and gender norms. I would like to address this and other such ways to incorporate real-world happenings into the classroom in pursuit of furthering students' knowledge and compassion as learners and community members.
